Jewelers that offer “conflict free” diamonds are limiting themselves to the Kimberley Process’s definition, which narrowly defines conflict diamonds as diamonds that finance rebel movements against recognized governments. What this definition leaves out is large numbers of diamonds that are tainted by violence, human rights abuses, poverty, environmental degradation, and other issues.

Our select group of diamond suppliers demonstrate a robust chain of custody protocol for their diamonds and have the ability to track and segregate diamonds by origin. These suppliers are required to source diamonds that originate from specific mine operators who follow internationally recognized labor, trade, and environmental standards. We also offer lab created and recycled diamonds, both of which are eco-friendly alternatives.

Our Canadian diamonds are sourced from the Diavik and Ekati mines, which are committed to the highest possible environmental and human rights standards. Both mines have demonstrated a strong commitment to hiring local Aboriginal people, providing a skilled apprenticeship program and sponsoring scholarship funds. Diavik has built the first large-scale wind farm in the Northwest Territories that can supply half the mine’s energy needs. Both the Diavik and Ekati mines have land reclamation and rehabilitation plans in place. Russian diamonds are sourced from the Yakutia region of northeast Siberia and the Arkhangelsk region along the White Sea coast. In Yakutia, the Mirny Sakha mine provides thousands of jobs to local residents who earn double the average Russian salary and receive housing benefits, health care, and pensions. The diamond industry is the economic lifeblood of this remote region of Russia. Although diamond mines have altered the physical landscape in some places and Russia’s geopolitical role is controversial, diamond mining has had many benefits for local communities. Diamond accents are challenging to track and segregate by origin due to their small size. Our diamond accents are Kimberley Process certified, but, unless otherwise specified on the product page, we do not identify a country of origin for our diamond accents. Where possible, our suppliers will prioritize sourcing accent diamonds that originate from Canada, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, or Russia.
Despite abundant natural resources, many artisanal miners live in abject poverty and endure horrific working conditions every day. The fair trade diamond model is an innovative approach to transforming the artisanal diamond mining sector and improving the livelihoods of miners.
